Cheburashka, the Soviet Union's Mickey Mouse, will be hitting the big screen soon, I learned on Vilhelm Konnander's weblog, which offers another fine voice to the online coverage of things Central and Eastern European. Read the Moscow Times story here.

What an odd-looking creature. I loved this quote from the article: "Although Cheburashka and his friends may never be able to compete with Pikachu and Satoshi here in Japan, somehow, the charm of a furry monkey/bear-like character seems more sincere than that of a slick yellow mouse that squeaks and has a history of causing seizures in small children," wrote the Yomiuri Shimbun in 2001, referring to an infamous 1997 incident when a broadcast of "Pokemon" induced seizures in Japanese children.

It is nice when children don't go into seizures on Saturday morning.
I just hope I can find the film on DVD -- with English subtitles or at least a Russian dub. I've only seen a couple of the old shows, but they're priceless -- so great.
